Ceasefire Begins: Israel and Hamas Reach Truce Amid Conflict

Ceasefire Between Israel and Hamas Begins

The long-awaited ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is now underway, with three Israeli hostages just released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and much-needed aid in Gaza.

Hostages Released and Assessed

The three women were taken for medical assessment, and President Biden has indicated they appear to be in good health. They are the first of 33 hostages set to be released over a six-week period according to the ceasefire deal, which will happen in three phases.

Emotional Reunions After Release

New photos show the three women finally out of Hamas captivity, safe in their mother’s arms. The Israeli government shared these images with the caption, “There’s nothing stronger than a mother’s embrace. Welcome home Emily, Deron, and Romy.”

Families Celebrate Reunions

Emotional reunions ensued for Emily Deari, Deron Steiner, and Romy Goonan, as well as their families and friends, who have waited 471 days for this moment. Video from Sunday shows Hamas handing over the hostages to the Red Cross in Gaza City, with drone footage capturing crowds surrounding the vehicles during their release.

Celebrations in Israel

The hostages’ safe arrival in Israel was followed by their handover to the IDF. Hundreds of Israelis celebrated in Tel Aviv, watching a live broadcast from Gaza. Among them were friends of Emily Deari, eager to embrace her and express their love.

Details of the Ceasefire Agreement

This marks the first phase of the long-awaited ceasefire deal, with Hamas expected to free 33 Israeli hostages. After each safe arrival of hostages, Palestinian prisoners will be released. Buses arrived at a prison in the West Bank to pick up these prisoners.

Ceasefire Terms and Aid Entry

White House National Security Coordinator Brett McGurk explained that Hamas had to provide a list of three names for the ceasefire to go into effect. Though there was a brief delay, the ceasefire is now fully in effect, with around 800 trucks of aid entering Gaza.

Aid Delivered to Gaza

Aid trucks were seen crossing into the Gaza Strip at the Rafah Crossing from Egypt on Sunday. The negotiated deal stipulates that the ceasefire will occur in three phases, with President Biden elaborating on the details of the first phase.

Timeline for Hostage Releases

President Biden announced that four more women will be released in seven days, followed by three additional hostages every seven days thereafter, including at least two American citizens. The first phase will last 42 days, with negotiations for the more challenging second phase set to begin two weeks in.

Future Hostage Releases Anticipated

The next release of hostages is expected on Saturday. Updates on the developments in the Middle East will continue to be provided.
