Alexander versus Tommy Paul is a blockbuster quarterfinal at the Australian Open for 2025, and both guys have been super impressive to get to this stage. Paul entered the tournament as a number 12 seed and took on O’Connell in the first round. This was a battle; after splitting the first four sets, Paul would squeak out the win 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5.
In the second round, Paul faced Isa Cori, who had been very impressive to get to this stage. After dropping the first set, Paul would run away with the match 6-7, 6-0, 6-3, 6-1. In the third round, he took on Bayana, and after the first set, he would again run away with the match 7-6, 6-2, 6-0.
In the fourth round, Paul faced Davina, who was coming off back-to-back two-set victories. However, this was too much for Davina, with Paul destroying him 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Alexander entered the tournament as the number two seed and took on his opponent in the first round, with no problem getting through in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
In the second round, he faced Martinez, and again, there was no problem for Alexander getting through in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-1. In the third round, Alexander faced Fley, who had taken out Kyrgios along the way. Again, there was no problem for Alexander, who got through in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the fourth round.
In the fourth round, Alexander faced Onbe, the 14th seed, and after splitting the first two sets, he got through in four 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.
These guys have played two times before, with Paul winning both their matches, including a match in 2022 at Indian Wells on the hard courts where he won 7-6 in the third. So, the confidence is high for Tommy Paul when he faces Alexander. However, they have never played at a slam and haven’t played for a few years, so let’s see if that confidence can help Paul at all.
If Paul is going to win this one, he needs to be a bit aggressive and move Alexander around. Also, he needs to bring variety to his game and come to the net. Paul has a very solid all-around game with no real weaknesses, so he will have to do everything right to make it to the semis.
If Alexander is going to win this one, he needs to serve well. He has been serving well all week and has been really solid for the most part, so he needs to keep doing that and maybe bring a little variety himself to get Paul off balance and try to beat Paul at his game.
This is a really fun matchup, and with the two having a head-to-head history, it makes it really interesting. I think Alexander might win this one, though, in five sets. I reckon this might be an absolute epic, and Paul will push Alexander to the brink, but Alexander in five sets will just get the job done and make it to the semis.
